How to De-Stress Through Journaling

When you feel stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, it can be hard to find a way to calm down. You know better than anyone what will help you feel better, but if you are looking for ideas, there are a lot of self-care strategies for you to try. One option we recommend? Journaling!

At Authentic Girl Co., we’ve seen what happens when girls have an opportunity to truly express their feelings and live authentically. We believe in the power of journaling! Follow the steps below to try it for yourself:

Unplug

Journaling with actual paper and a pen or pencil means stepping away from all the electronics in your life for a while. All the input you receive from social media, messaging apps, and more can be overstimulating, and the news you read or the drama you see unfolding between your friends can contribute to your stress. Getting away from all the noise is one step you can take to calm down, and journaling can give you a reason and a purpose.

Write Your Feelings

Social media makes it easy to connect with friends around the world, but it isn’t a great outlet for some of your more private thoughts or emotions. Talking to your friends can also be a great way to de-stress, but not when your relationship with them is what is stressing you out. It can also be frustrating to express your feelings and have a friend try to solve your problems when all you want to do is talk.

A personal diary is the perfect place to pour out your thoughts and feelings. You can let it all out! There is no judgement, and putting those negative feelings on paper can make them easier to handle. You can even “throw away” negative thoughts by writing them down, tearing out the page when you are done, and throwing it in the trash or putting it through a parent’s paper shredder. You may be surprised by how much better you’ll feel with this simple action!

Problem Solve

A personal diary is also a great place to work out your problems. Once you’ve written down all of your thoughts, and you don’t feel quite as stressed or emotional, then you can start to think about how you can tackle your problems.

With a journal, you can look at what you’ve written and think more carefully about what is stressing you out and why. Writing – or drawing! – can be really helpful for organizing your thoughts and finding solutions. Once you understand what is really bothering you, you have the power to do something about it!

Focus on the Positives

Once you’ve released a lot of your negative feelings, try to focus on the positives. When life starts to stress you out, take the time to think about the silver lining of bad things that have happened or think of positive things in your life that make you happy or excited. Practicing gratitude can help you stop obsessing over things you can’t change, and it can help you feel happier over time!

Plan for the Future

Now you’ve written down how you feel, why you feel that way, how you can fix it, and you’ve listed a few things that make you feel better. Put them all together, and you have a game plan for the next time you feel this way! If you write down what made you feel better in this moment, then you can try it again the next time you feel frustrated or overwhelmed.

Did journaling make you feel better? If it did, awesome! Now you can make it a habit whenever you feel bad. If journaling isn’t for you, that’s okay! There are a lot of other self-care tricks you can try, like drawing or dancing.
